As in many things, timing is EVERYTHING in politics, even when you're talking about humor. Bob Dole's most humanizing moment in 1996 was after his loss, when asked if the results hurt: "I slept like a baby: I woke up every two hours and cried." Similarly, the relatively short Michael Dukakis had his best moment at the Al Smith dinner, after (the first) Bush had essentially eclipsed him, when he said something close to the following: "Mr. Vice President, you always say that you want to help the little man.
